Female Career Advancement – from Equal Opportunities to Diversity in STEM

According to Statista, women are still underrepresented in the STEM sector in 2024: only 32% of all first-year students in Germany are female, a figure that is steadily decreasing in mid-level academic positions and ultimately only lowers to 14% at professorial level. Technical universities and research institutions with a pronounced technical profile face the greatest challenges compared to other disciplines in the initial recruitment, targeted promotion and ultimately appointment of female scientists.

In addition to increasing the appeal of the STEM field to women, universities and research institutions are faced with questions on (gender) equality, diversity, family support, dual career issues and, last but not least, an overall corporate culture that can make them attractive to female scientist even if they are underrepresented in their respective institutes and working groups.
