The University of Göttingen is an internationally important research university with a focus on basic and application-oriented research and research-oriented teaching. Founded in 1737 in the Age of Enlightenment, it is committed to the values of democracy, tolerance and justice as well as the social responsibility of science. In 2003, it was the first comprehensive university in Germany to be transferred to the sponsorship of a foundation under public law. With 13 faculties, it covers a differentiated range of subjects in the natural sciences, humanities and social sciences as well as medicine. The diversity of scientific disciplines, which are bundled in 13 faculties, offers an intrinsic strength for interdisciplinary cooperation. Today, out of 130,000 inhabitants, about 28,500 are students and around 13,000 employees of the university. 44 Nobel Laureates have studied, taught or worked in the lively science city in the middle of Germany. Together with eight non-university research institutes on the Göttingen Campus, a unique environment was created that promotes diversity and an active exchange between professors, researchers and doctoral students.
