The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) promotes education, science and research. Its aim is to find solutions to global problems and to devise strategies for sustainable growth. The BMBF‘s responsibility in the area of education addresses every stage of human life, beginning with early childhood learning through to continuing education and lifelong learning. Whereas school and university education are mainly in the remit of the Länder, the Federal Government also plays a significant role, for example by means of the Higher Education Pact. In the areas of science and research, the BMBF promotes research excellence. The Excellence Initiative, the Pact for Research and Innovation and the Tenure-Track Programme provide new impulses for the research community and promote young research talent.
